IRS Warns of Yet Another E-mail Scam

The latest e-mail scam targeting taxpayers is intended to fool people into believing they are under investigation by IRS's Criminal Investigation (CI) division, IRS said in a warning released on May 31.  As described by the agency, the e-mail claiming to come from CI falsely states that the person is under a criminal probe for submitting a false tax return to the California Franchise Tax Board. The idea is to entice recipients to click on a link or open an attachment to learn more about the supposed investigation. IRS warned that the e-mail link and attachment is a “Trojan Horse” that can allow someone to gain remote access to the computer. People should not click on the link or open the attachment, IRS stressed. Similar e-mail variations suggest a customer has filed a complaint against a company and IRS can act as an arbiter, IRS said, adding that these versions seem to target both business taxpayers and individual taxpayers. IRS doesn't send unsolicited e-mails or ask for detailed personal and financial information, the agency said.
